Australian Asbestos Worries

The ferry services to and from Manly, Australia were cancelled yesterday for two hours after staff raised concerns about work on removing asbestos.

Sydney Ferries Corporation said an upgrade of the wharf began two months ago, part of which involves the removal of asbestos from the site.

Sydney Ferries staff at the wharf held a stopwork meeting after becoming concerned the asbestos might pose a threat to their health.

They resumed work after inspectors were called in to the site.

The residents of May Terrace in the Witney Pier area of Sydney want to be relocated from their public housing unit until the Cape Breton Regional Housing Authority removes attic insulation believed to contain asbestos and deems it safe for them to return.
